# Install the Editor, Agents app and CLI

How the Neural Inverse Build apps are installed on macOS, Windows and Linux, and how to install the CLI.

Neural Inverse Build is pre-release. Interfaces and data formats may change between versions.

## The Editor and the Agents app

The Editor and the Agents app are two desktop apps that are installed together. Each has its own icon, process and data folder, and either can run on its own.

| App | Name on your system | Data folder |
|---|---|---|
| Editor | Neural Inverse | `.neural-inverse` |
| Agents app | Neural Inverse Agents | `.neural-inverse-agents` |

Both apps are built for macOS, Windows and Linux. Your administrator provides the installer for your organisation, together with the address of your organisation's Govern deployment if the build does not already contain it. After installing, [sign in](https://neuralinverse.com/docs/get-started/sign-in/).

## The CLI

The CLI is installed on its own. The command is `neuralinverse`, with the short alias `ni`.

### With npm

Requires Node.js 22.19 or newer.

```bash
npm install -g @neuralinverse/cli
```

### As a standalone binary

The standalone binary needs no Node.js. Your administrator gives you the installer address (`<installer-url>`) when your organisation has access. The installer downloads the binary for your platform, verifies it against the release's `SHA256SUMS` file, and refuses to install on any mismatch or missing checksum. It installs to `~/.neuralinverse/bin` (on Windows, `%USERPROFILE%\.neuralinverse\bin`) with the `ni` alias, and does not edit your shell profile.

| Platform | Architectures |
|---|---|
| macOS | x64, arm64 |
| Linux | x64, arm64; musl-based distributions on x64 only |
| Windows | x64 |

macOS and Linux:

```bash
curl -fsSL <installer-url>/install.sh | sh
```

Windows (PowerShell):

```powershell
irm <installer-url>/install.ps1 | iex
```

Installer options:

| Option | Environment variable | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| `--version <X>` (`-Version` on Windows) | `NI_VERSION` | Install that release instead of the latest |
| `--dir <path>` (`-InstallDir` on Windows) | `NI_INSTALL_DIR` | Install directory |
| `-AddToPath` (Windows only) | | Also add the install directory to the user `PATH` |
| | `NI_DOWNLOAD_BASE` | Download from a mirror: assets are fetched from `$NI_DOWNLOAD_BASE/cli-v<version>/` |

If your network has no access to public package sources, your administrator can host the release assets and `SHA256SUMS` on an internal mirror and set `NI_DOWNLOAD_BASE`.

### Check the installation

```bash
neuralinverse doctor
```

The CLI makes one request of its own besides your model providers and the services you configure: a daily version check against the npm registry. Set `NEURALINVERSE_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK=1` to turn it off. It is also off in CI.

Next: [sign in](https://neuralinverse.com/docs/get-started/sign-in/), or [set up a model](https://neuralinverse.com/docs/build/models/) and start the CLI in your project folder.
