# Upgrade the SCL edition

Upgrade an SCL file from Edition 1 (2003) to Edition 2 (2007B) or 2.1 (2007B4), or from 2007B to 2007B4, with a preview of every change and every item left for you.

**State:** modelled. Tested on a hand-written Edition 1 station covering every input case; RiseClipse 1.3.0 found nothing new in what the upgrade writes on the public files (56 files to 2007B, 86 to 2007B4). The rules come from the IEC's SCL schemas of the three editions as republished by LF Energy CoMPAS; the standard's text on migration was not read, and no vendor tool has opened an upgraded file.

## Upgrade

1. Open the SCL file and run **Upgrade SCL Edition...**.
2. Pick the target: **2007B** or **2007B4**. A file already at or past the target is refused.
3. The preview lists every change with its line, each checked; uncheck the ones you do not want. The edition change itself always stays. Items left for you are listed greyed.
4. Accept. The chosen changes are made as one Undo step, a notice gives the counts, and both lists go to the **Energy** output channel with line numbers.

## What the upgrade changes

- The `SCL` element's `version`, `revision` and `release`.
- From 2003 to 2007B: `originalSclVersion="2003"` and `originalSclRevision="A"` on each IED.
- From 2003: the source of each input (`serviceType`, `srcLDInst`, `srcPrefix`, `srcLNClass`, `srcLNInst`, `srcCBName`), filled from the one control block (GOOSE, Sampled Values or report) of the sending IED whose data set carries exactly that data.
- From 2007B to 2007B4: the release.

## What it leaves for you

It does not guess. Listed and left as they are:

- an input that two control blocks carry, or that none carries;
- an input sent by GSSE;
- an input naming a missing IED, or already naming part of its source;
- names Edition 2 no longer allows (logical device `inst`, data set, control block, prefix);
- `Private` elements without a type;
- from 2007B to 2007B4, IEDs without `originalSclVersion`.

**Try it:** upgrading a hand-written Edition 1 station to 2007B4 lists 4 changes (the edition, and three inputs of P2 getting their control blocks) and 9 items left: an input carried by two control blocks, one no data set carries, a GSSE input, an input from a missing IED, one already naming part of its source, three names Edition 2 no longer allows, and a `Private` without a type.

## Limits

- Edition 2 Services capabilities, data model changes and Edition 2.1 later binding are not migrated: an IED's Edition 2 capabilities come from its vendor's Edition 2 ICD and cannot be derived from an Edition 1 file.
- Downgrades are not offered.

## Not verified

- Real Edition 1 files from a vendor tool, and a vendor tool opening an upgraded file.
- Windows.
