# New project from a part or board

The New Project wizard, its part and board catalogues read from your installed Vivado, Quartus and open-flow tools, and what it writes.

**New Project...** opens a wizard in the style of Vivado's New Project dialog. Parts and boards come from your installed tools, never from a list Neural Inverse types in.

## Create a project

1. Run **New Project...**.
2. Choose the project type: RTL, I/O planning, imported (from a vendor project), or an example.
3. On the **Parts** tab, filter by vendor, family, package, speed grade, temperature grade (including industrial, automotive XA and defence XQ) and minimum resources, or search. The table has the vendor's columns: I/O pins, available IOBs, LUTs, flip-flops, block RAM, UltraRAM, DSP, BUFG, and transceivers with their types. Keyboard navigation works in the table.
4. Or, on the **Boards** tab, choose a board and its revision; the latest board file version is the default.
5. Choose the folder to create the project in, and create it.

The wizard writes `hdl.json`, `rtl/`, `constraints/`, `sim/` and a constraints file in the target's format with the board's clock and pins, turns the HDL environment on and opens the project.

A post-synthesis project type is not offered, because the Vivado flow does not start from a netlist.

## Where the parts and boards come from

| Source | How it is read | State |
|---|---|---|
| Project IceStorm, Project Trellis, Apicula, Project X-Ray, openFPGALoader | Their device and board databases where your tools installed them | **Verified (Linux)**: 742 parts and 127 boards read; iCE40 UP5K and ECP5 25F projects created and built to bitstreams; the Arty A7 example from Digilent's board files built with openXC7 and its testbench passing |
| AMD Vivado | A Tcl script run by Vivado in batch: its parts, its board files, the board store, and the folders in `neuralInverse.hdl.vivado.boardRepoPaths` for company boards | **Kit shipped**: the catalogue Tcl is tested against emulated Vivado commands; not yet run against Vivado |
| Altera Quartus Prime | `quartus_sh` | **Kit shipped**; Quartus rows carry no resource counts until a Quartus release is probed |
| Microchip Libero SoC, Lattice Radiant | Not offered: neither documents a part list in batch mode | The wizard says how to write the part number by hand |

A table of 12,003 parts was drawn in about 130 ms in the tests (filter 8 ms, sort 24 ms).

On Windows, vendor launchers that are batch files (such as `vivado.bat`) are started through `cmd.exe` with escaped arguments. That is modelled in unit tests, **not run on Windows**.

## Company board files

Set `neuralInverse.hdl.vivado.boardRepoPaths` to the folders of your company's Vivado board files. They appear on the Boards tab beside AMD's, as Vivado reads them.
