SDSF panels and console commands

SDSF's panels as native tables through SDSF's REXX interface, SYSLOG and OPERLOG, actions and overtypes with confirmation, a read-only mode, and z/OS console commands limited to an allow list.

Verification state: not yet run against SDSF or a z/OS console. The module's SDSF exec, run under Regina REXX on modelled SDSF variables, writes byte for byte what the model writes; both routes (TSO/E and batch) run over TLS against the z/OSMF-shaped server. Column names, action characters per panel, titles and the SYSLOG line layout come from IBM's SHARE session and public sample execs, not from the SDSF User's Guide. The verification kit has read-only SDSF steps and, when enabled, two display console commands.

Open an SDSF panel

Open SDSF Panel... shows a panel as a native table, with the panel's own filters, column sorting and row filters. Refresh SDSF Panel reads it again.

Actions and overtypes

Through ISFACT:

  • actions: cancel, cancel with dump, restart, hold, release, purge, release for printing;
  • overtypes of class, priority, output class, destination and forms. An overtype is offered only when the panel's answer has its column.

Each is confirmed, naming the row, the system and sysplex, the connection and host.

neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.readOnly (a machine setting, off by default) shows panels and logs but offers and sends no action or overtype.

How the panels are read

The module's own exec uses SDSF's REXX interface (ISFEXEC, ISFACT, ISFLOG):

  • Through TSO/E when neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.execLibrary names a library. The exec is written there only with your consent. Auto refresh and log follow work only this way, so the spool is not filled with jobs.
  • Otherwise as one batch job per request under IKJEFT1B, with the job card in neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.jobCard.
SettingDefaultMeaning
neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.maxRows1000Rows read per panel
neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.refreshSeconds30Auto refresh interval (through TSO/E only)
neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.logLines, neuralInverse.mainframe.sdsf.logMinutesHow much of SYSLOG or OPERLOG is read back

z/OS console commands

Issue z/OS Console Command (SDSF's /) sends a command through z/OSMF console services.

  1. Type the command.
  2. It must start with an entry of neuralInverse.mainframe.consoleCommandPrefixes, a machine allow list (default D and $D). ; is always refused. The check runs before any request.
  3. Confirm. The command and its solicited response are logged.

The console is neuralInverse.mainframe.consoleName. Users need OPERCMDS authority.
